Y.E.S. 2007-2008 Season

If You Give a Mouse a Cookie
Based on the book by Laura Joffe Numeroff
Adapted by Judy Davidson

October 13 - 28, 2007

Who would ever suspect that a tiny little mouse could wear out an energetic young boy? If you're going to go around giving an exuberantly bossy rodent a cookie, you'd better be prepared to do one or two more favors for it before your day is through. This tale of warped logic is a sure-fire winner in the giggle-generator category.

42nd Street*
12th Annual Youth Musical
Based on the film 42nd Street and the novel by Bradford Ropes
Music by Harry Warren, Lyrics by Al Dubin

November 10 - December 15, 2007

Come and meet those dancing feet! Ingenue Peggy Swayer lands her first job in the chorus of a new Broadway show. When the star, Miss Dorothy Brock, has an accident, Peggy is given the chance of a lifetime. Inspired by Busby Berkeley's 1933 movie, the musical includes one great number after another, making it a feast of titanium-plated hits that include "You're Getting to Be a Habit with Me," "Shuffle off to Buffalo," "We're in the Money," "Lullaby of Broadway," and of course, the show-stopping "42nd Street."
*Special Engagement!

Bunnicula
Based on the book by Deborah and James Howe
Adapted by Jon Klein
Music by Chris Jeffries

February 2 - 17, 2008

Someone is sucking the life out of innocent vegetables at the Monroe house! Could the family's new foundling rabbit - Bunnicula - actually be a vampire? Or is this just another case of pet rivalry? Harold the dignified dog and Chester the literate cat showcase their intelligence, wit, and fine singing voices as they attempt to solve the mystery and save their human family, in this musical version of the popular novel for children.

The Hundred Dresses

Based on the book by Eleanor Estes
Adapted by William Kent Williams

March 29 - April 13, 2008

Wanda Petronski doesn't speak or dress like the other girls at school, but she describes for them the hundred dresses she has at home. Adapted from Eleanor Estes' 1944 Newbery Honor book, this is a timeless story about moral courage, the painful consequences of teasing, and a problem known today as "fashion bullying."

Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing

Based on the book by Judy Blume
Adapted by Bruce Mason

May 17 - June 1, 2008

Any fourth grader would agree that Peter Hatcher has a terrible problem - his little brother, Fudge. But the grownups in Peter's life don't see it that way. Peter is finding his brother harder and harder to take, and when Fudge shows interest in Peter's pet turtle, that is the living end.

Mr. Popper's Penguins
Based on the book by Richard and Florence Atwater
Adapted by Albert O. Mitchell

July 12 - 27, 2008

Poor Mr. Popper isn't exactly unhappy; he just wishes he had seen something of the world before meeting Mrs. Popper and settling down. Most of all, he wishes he had seen the Poles, and spends his spare time between house-painting jobs reading all about polar explorations. Admiral Drake, in response to Mr. Popper's fan letter, sends him a penguin and life at 432 Proudfoot Avenue is never the same again! From one penguin living in the icebox, the Popper family grows to include 12 penguins!

Y.E.S. School Shows

Y.E.S. School Shows are performed on selected weekday mornings at the convenient, comfortable Morgan-Wixson Theatre. Y.E.S. shows develop students' appreciation of the performing arts (supporting California VAPA standards 1.0., 4.0., and 5.0) and provide a meaningful connection to literature being used in the classroom. Teacher Guides are provided for each show, containing background information about the book's author and the stage adaptation, as well as curriculum ideas to extend your class' experience.

Teachers who are subscribed to the Y.E.S. School Shows email list receive the first opportunity to reserve seats for their class. Also, we use the email list to request teachers' feedback about books we are considering for dramatization in the future. To sign up for the Y.E.S. School Shows email list, click here.

Tickets for School Shows are $5 per person (children and adults) and a limited number of scholarship tickets are available in cases of students' financial hardship. The Morgan-Wixson Theatre is convenient to Big Blue Bus #7 or #8, and parking is available nearby for school buses or parent vehicles. Virginia Park is located a short walking distance from the theatre and classes have enjoyed picnicking there after a show. To inquire about shows for the 2007-08 school year or to receive further information, please email us at yestheatre@yahoo.com.
