Esther, a thirty-five-year-old spinster African-American seamstress in 1905 Manhattan, earns a living creating exquisite custom lingerie for women of the boudoir and the brothel alike. The intimate undergarments become a metaphor for the intimate relationships she develops with her clients. Painfully lonely, she dreams of a better life and finding a husband. She becomes a new woman when she falls in love with a handsome Barbadian laborer who woos her through a series of romantic letters, while her friendship with a shy Jewish fabric merchant grows in unexpected ways. This winner of five national awards for Best Play tells the story of one woman's passion to break free and be herself in a society where she cannot quite fit into the set patterns that are stitched for African-American women. |

A review of the January/February show:
Palisadian Post Sue Pascoe, Staff Writer February 06, 2008
'Social Security,' written by screenwriter Andrew Bergman ('The In-laws,' 'Fletch,' 'Blazing Saddles') has lots of laughs and the actors deliver them all.
The name of the play, now on stage at the Morgan-Wixson Theatre, may not entice a playgoer, but the humor, the acting, and the direction of this comedy should because this perfectly enjoyable production amounts to a delightful evening of theater. ... A review of last summer's show:
Palisadian Post Sue Pascoe, Staff Writer July 18, 2007
'Oklahoma!': A Summer Treasure Wow! The production of 'Oklahoma!' at the Morgan-Wixson Theater in Santa Monica is a treat, a joy and a must-see. The singing is beyond what you'd expect for a community theater production: it is Broadway quality. ... Click here to be directed to the Palisadian Post website to read the remainder of the review |
